I want to take you back to early 2018. We were just weeks away from opening Zoe’s very first home in Kenya. After months of planning, praying, and construction, the moment we had worked toward was finally within reach.
Then, on a Monday morning I will never forget, our Kenyan Country Director, Paul, walked into my office. The day before, his pastor had asked him to check on a group of children living in Namanjalala, a small village on the outskirts of Kitale. We knew almost nothing about their situation, but we knew we needed to go. So Paul and I climbed into the truck and headed toward the village.
I remember it feeling like it took forever to find the one compound we were looking for. The roads became narrower, the mud grew deeper, and at one point we even got the truck stuck trying to reach the village. After finally making our way there, what happened next became one of those moments I'll never forget. Looking back now, I believe that day didn't just shape me personally, but it helped shape the future of Zoe Ministries.
As we stepped out of the truck, we made our way toward a small compound with several mud huts scattered across the property. We stood outside talking with a local pastor who had made the referral. He and Paul spoke back and forth in Swahili while I listened, unable to understand much. Then, out of one of the huts, three children slowly emerged. One of the older siblings was carrying the youngest in their arms. The moment I saw her, my heart sank. My first thought wasn't about how we could help, it was, No... she's too young for us.
The local pastor began sharing the story of the three sisters: Mercy, Maureen, and Elizabeth. Just days before we arrived, their mother had died from HIV after spending weeks in the hospital. During her hospitalization, their father abandoned them, leaving the girls to fend for themselves. I stood there in disbelief as their story unfolded. In a matter of days, these three innocent girls had lost everything they knew. Mercy, the oldest, had suddenly become the caregiver, doing everything she could to fill the role of a mother. Little Elizabeth, too young to understand what had happened, kept asking to see her mom. I can honestly say I wasn't prepared for that moment. I was heartbroken and it challenged every boundary I had placed around what orphan care was supposed to look like for Zoe.
Paul and I climbed back into the truck and made the drive to Kitale. The girls would stay with a neighbor while we decided what to do. I remember looking at Paul and saying, "We can't take Elizabeth. She's too young for Zoe." He understood why I felt that way, and that evening we went our separate ways.
But I couldn't stop thinking about her. The more I thought about those three sisters, the more I realized we couldn't ask them to endure another loss by separating them from one another.
The next morning, I walked into the office, and before I could say a word, Paul looked at me and asked, "How can we separate them?" At that moment, the answer was clear. It didn't matter what restrictions we had placed on ourselves or what we thought we were prepared for. God had already made it clear. We were rescuing all 3 sisters.
Today, all three sisters are thriving. They're doing well in school, growing into confident young women, and have come so far since the day we met them in that small village in 2018. But their story didn’t end there.
Over the past few years, our social work and counseling teams have worked tirelessly to rebuild the relationship between Mercy, Maureen, Elizabeth, and their biological family. Through counseling, family strengthening, and practical support, a relative was equipped to provide the stable, loving home the girls deserved.
Today, while Zoe continues to provide for their education, all three sisters have been successfully reintegrated into their family. And the beautiful part? They still regularly return to Zoe to visit the houseparents who loved and cared for them during that important chapter of their lives.
Their story reminds me that the goal of orphan care isn't simply to rescue children, it's to restore families whenever possible. Sometimes the greatest success isn't that a child comes to Zoe. It's that, one day, they no longer need to stay.
Why is this story so important to me? Because it became one of the defining moments of my life and ministry. It was the moment I realized that the plans and parameters I had carefully written on paper wouldn't always align with the plans God had for me or for Zoe.
That day taught me something I'll never forget: never put God in a box. When he calls us to something beyond what we believe we're capable of, he is also faithful to provide everything we need. Looking back now, I'm so grateful we said yes. It changed the lives of three sisters, and forever changed the heart of Zoe Ministries.

Clean water was never part of the original vision for Zoe. It only became a reality because of your generosity. In those early years, I wasn’t comfortable allowing donated funds to sit idle in a bank account when they could be actively changing lives. So we began asking a simple question: What more can we do? That question led us to clean water.
In June 2020, we drilled our very first well. As funding became available, we continued drilling throughout the Kitale region. Around that same time, we formed a small water team led by Keith, a Zoe staff member in Kenya. I sent him to be trained by a close friend who had spent more than a decade serving in the clean water sector. What started as a small step of faith quickly grew into something much bigger. As we witnessed the impact of clean water and began sharing those stories with you, support poured in beyond anything we could have imagined.
After serving in the Kitale region for a few years and drilling several wells, I received an invitation from a missionary friend to visit the area where she and her husband had been serving, about two hours north of Kitale. I immediately said yes.
A few days later, I called Keith and told him to be ready for a vision trip. He asked, “Where are we going?”
I replied, “West Pokot.”
In the year leading up to our trip, I’d heard countless stories about West Pokot from friends and fellow missionaries. They described it as one of the most remote and challenging regions in Kenya. A place with rugged terrain, difficult roads, deep tradition, and a nomadic culture that could make ministry incredibly challenging.
I did my best to approach the trip with an open mind, but the truth is, I had no idea what to expect. It was only supposed to be a one-day vision trip. I thought we’d drive up, see the area, meet a few people, and head back to Kitale that evening.
I couldn’t have been more wrong.
As we entered the region, we eventually had to leave our vehicle behind and continue by motorcycle because the roads had become impassable for our small car. After a 15-minute ride over dusty trails and riverbeds, we finally arrived at my friends’ makeshift home.
We were in the middle of nowhere. And I truly mean nowhere.
The level of need surrounding us was unlike anything I had experienced anywhere else in Kenya. It’s difficult to put into words. The families we visited and the villages we walked through had so little. Not just a lack of convenience but also a lack of the most basic necessities.
Keith and I looked at each other several times that day in disbelief. We had both spent years serving vulnerable communities, but neither of us had ever witnessed poverty on this scale. And that’s saying something. Keith is Kenyan. He grew up just a couple of hours away in Kitale, yet even he admitted he had never seen anything like what we experienced in West Pokot.
As the day came to an end, we climbed back into the car and began the long drive toward Kitale. Neither of us said much for a while. We were both trying to process everything we had seen.
Finally, I looked over at Keith and asked, “What do you think?”
He paused for a moment, then looked back at me and simply said, “How can we not help?”
When we returned to Kitale, we told our missionary friends that Zoe would commit to bringing clean water to their community in West Pokot.
That commitment marked the beginning of our work in West Pokot, and we’ve never looked back.
Because of your generosity and your heart for the people of West Pokot, we’ve been able to dedicate our water team exclusively to this region. Together, you’ve helped bring clean water, hope, and the love of Christ to thousands and thousands of people who were once overlooked.
It all happened because you chose to say “yes.”
As I write this, I’m amazed at what God has done through your faithfulness.
Take a look at what you’ve helped make possible in West Pokot so far:
Wells drilled: 10
Wells repaired: 640
People served through clean water: 496,000
Children placed in school: 420
Women in our farming program: 432
Individuals baptized: 247
Pastors trained: 79
Churches planted: 10
These numbers truly amaze me. As incredible as the statistics are, they were never our ultimate goal. From the very beginning, our investment in West Pokot has been driven by the Gospel.
Many of the communities we’ve been privileged to serve are considered unreached. These are places where few have ever heard the name of Jesus. Through clean water, God has opened doors that otherwise would have remained closed. Lives are being saved physically through access to safe water, and even more importantly, lives are being transformed eternally through the hope of the Gospel.
What began as a simple day trip in the fall of 2021 turned into something neither Keith nor I could have ever imagined. Today, both of our hearts beat for the people of West Pokot, and we’re grateful that so many of you have made their story your own.
As we continue serving this remarkable region, I’ll leave you with the same question Keith asked me on the drive home that day: “How can we not help?”

One of the greatest lessons God has taught me over the past ten years is this: your generosity fuels the mission of Zoe, but it is our incredible Kenyan team that faithfully brings that mission to life every single day.
Once my initial vision was on paper, I knew I needed to find a local Kenyan to help lead the ministry alongside me. One of my closest friends recommended a childhood friend of his named Paul. I trusted his opinion, so I asked him to set up a time for the two of us to grab coffee.
Paul and I grabbed coffee the following week at a local spot in Kitale called Iroko Twigs. At the time, I was 23 years old and Paul was 37. It was the first time we had ever met.
Over coffee, I shared the vision God had placed on my heart and asked if he would consider building it with me. I explained that I would soon be returning to the United States to begin raising support and hoped to be back in Kenya within a few months. Until then, all I could offer was a vision and a lot of faith that God would provide.
Paul said yes.
Fast-forward to the fall of 2017. We had just purchased land in Kenya, and I returned to the United States for two months to raise the funds needed to build Zoe’s very first home. After those two months of fundraising, I returned to Kenya in early October. I had committed to spending a full year there, which meant celebrating both Thanksgiving and Christmas thousands of miles away from my family.
As Christmas approached, I found myself struggling more than I expected. I hate to admit it, but I wasn't as tough as I thought I was. Being away from my family during the holidays was incredibly difficult. I called my parents, and they could hear it in my voice before I ever said a word.
Long story short, I realized I wasn't going to make it an entire year without seeing my family. So, I booked a three week trip home for April 2018. I needed to recharge, hug my family, and then head back to Kenya.
Why am I telling you this?
Because when my parents and I were leaving the Memphis airport after landing back home, my mom said, "We're so glad you're home. We didn't think we'd see you for a year."
Without hesitation, I replied, "You can thank Paul for that!"
I explained that the only reason I felt comfortable leaving Kenya for three weeks was because of the trust and confidence I had in Paul. I knew the work would continue in my absence because I knew the man leading it.
As the years have passed and our work has continued to grow, I've often asked Paul what he was thinking during that first coffee meeting in 2016 when I shared the vision for Zoe.
He tells me, "I thought you were crazy."
Then he follows it with, "But I felt the Lord telling me to say yes."
I'm thankful he listened.
Today, it's no longer just the two of us. Zoe Ministries has grown into a team of nearly 60 staff members serving across Kenya and the United States.
It's still hard for me to wrap my head around.
But one thing remains certain: I'll always be grateful for Paul and the heart he has for Zoe. His leadership, wisdom, humility, and unwavering faith have shaped this ministry in ways most people will never fully understand. I will forever be indebted to him for believing in God's vision for Zoe before there was any evidence it would succeed.
As I've gotten older, I've never stopped being amazed by what God has done through Zoe Ministries. But if I'm honest, I get just as excited watching what this ministry has done in the lives of our own staff and their families.
One of the greatest joys of the past decade has been watching our staff invest in themselves and, in turn, invest in their families. Time and time again, I've watched men and women work full-time while sacrificing evenings and weekends to earn certifications, diplomas, and additional training to create a better future for those they love.
Keith began with Zoe digging post holes by hand with a steel pipe for our fencing projects. Today, he leads our entire clean water team, overseeing work that has brought safe water to hundreds of thousands of people.
Ayub started as a brickmaker, helping construct some of Zoe's earliest buildings.Today, he serves as one of our social workers, walking alongside vulnerable children and families every day.
These are just a few examples of what opportunity looks like.
As we close out our first ten years of ministry, I find myself overwhelmed with gratitude for the men and women I have the privilege of serving alongside each day. Simply put, none of this would be possible without your willingness to faithfully love and serve your fellow neighbors.
Thank you for believing in the vision of Zoe. Thank you for your countless sacrifices, your unwavering faith, and your commitment to the people God has entrusted to our care.
